If you’re looking for a November getaway that blends jaw-dropping scenery, world-class films, inspiring speakers, and a heavy dose of fresh mountain air, Banff is calling. The Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year (November 1–9, 2025) and the lineup is stacked.

This isn’t just a “sit in a theatre” type festival. It’s nine days of outdoor spirit—over 80 films (including world and North American premieres), live talks from legendary adventurers like Børge Ousland, Christina “Lusti” Lustenberger, James Balog, Wade Davis, and Lynn Hill, plus free community events, live music, and the always-bustling Festival Marketplace.

Special 50th Anniversary Highlights:

  • Fire and Ice Symposium – November 4–5. A new addition featuring in-depth talks and panels.
  • Film Pitch Session – Hear ideas that might become the next big mountain film.
  • Retrospective Podcast – Celebrating 50 years of adventure storytelling.
  • Free talks on the Rab Stage, exhibitions, downtown events, and happy hours with live music.

Tickets start at $20, and passes are available for the whole festival or specific weekends. You can grab yours at the festival site. Film finalists will be announced October 2.

Getting There from Edmonton

Banff is about a 4.5-hour drive (with no major sightseeing stops) from Edmonton via QEII, Calgary, and the Trans-Canada Highway. If you’ve got the time, you can make it a scenic drive:

  • Option 1: Straight shot through Calgary – quickest route.
  • Option 2: Detour via the Icefields Parkway from Jasper – adds hours, but you’ll see glaciers, wildlife, and waterfalls (more of a summer/fall option unless you’re winter-ready).

Where to Stay

Banff gets busy during the festival, so book early. Choices range from high-end stays like the Fairmont Banff Springs to cozy lodges and budget-friendly hostels. For more space (and to save a bit), consider Canmore—just a 20-minute drive away.

Tips for Making the Most of It

  • Layer up: November in Banff can bring anything from sunny fall days to full-blown winter.
  • Mix events and outdoors: Take advantage of daylight for short hikes or a gondola ride, then settle in for evening screenings.
  • Parking: Downtown Banff gets congested. Use free shuttles where possible.
  • Book your tickets early: Popular screenings and passes sell out quickly.

If you’ve ever wanted to combine a weekend in the Rockies with a celebration of mountain culture at its finest, this is the year. Fifty years in the making—and from Edmonton, it’s a road trip you can pull off in a weekend.
