48 Hour Itinerary

Nestled in the Canadian Rockies, Grande Cache is a hidden gem offering breathtaking landscapes and a rich history. Established in 1966, the town was built primarily to support the local coal mining industry. Today, Grande Cache is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a variety of activities from hiking and fishing to wildlife viewing and camping.

One of its standout features is the Sulphur Gates, a stunning natural viewpoint offering panoramic views of the Smoky River and the surrounding canyons.

Day 1

Morning

1. Sulphur Gates

Location: Sulphur Gates Road, Grande Cache, AB
Start your tour with a visit to Sulphur Gates, just a short drive from the town. Enjoy a short hike to the viewpoint, where you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of the confluence of the Smoky River and Sulphur River. This site is perfect for photography and soaking in the natural beauty of the region.

2. Wild Blue Yonder Rafting

Location: 11113 97 Ave, Grande Cache
If you’re up for an adventure, book a morning rafting trip with Wild Blue Yonder. They offer family-friendly rafting trips down the Smoky River, suitable for all experience levels.

Lunch

3. Grand Cache Pizza Ltd.

Location: 1323 Shoppers Park Mall, Grande Cache
After your rafting trip, head to the mall for a very casual lunch and some window shopping.  Perhaps play pool while you are there. 

Afternoon

4. Pierre Grey’s Lakes Provincial Park

Directions: 37km south of Grande Cache on Hwy. 40 & 3 km east on access road
Spend the afternoon exploring Pierre Grey’s Lakes. This provincial park offers excellent fishing, hiking, and canoeing opportunities. It’s a great spot for families to enjoy the natural beauty and perhaps spot some local wildlife.

Dinner

5. Ridgeview Restaurant and Lounge

Location: 2300 Pine Plaza Rd, Grande Cache, AB T0E 0Y0
A family-friendly restaurant with a kids’ menu, where you can relax and enjoy your meal.

Day 2

Morning

1. Grande Cache Labyrinth Park

Directions: Entrance located at the corner of 97 Avenue and 104 Street, Grande Cache
Start your second day with a peaceful walk in the Grande Cache Labyrinth Park. This serene park offers a unique labyrinth walk, perfect for meditation and relaxation.

2. Central Park

Directions: Located at the corner of Hoppe Avene & Shand Avenue at the Grande Cache Recreation Centre, Central Park has a Climbing Rock, paved trails, a green gym, an amphitheater, and a spray park.  Change rooms are available, too.

Lunch

3. Noelle’s Cafe

Location: 1319 Shoppers Park Mall Grande Cache
A local favourite, the café features a light lunch menu.

Afternoon

4. Griffiths Trail

Directions: The main trail sign is located on the north side of Hoppe Avenue, southwest of the town site, just before the Grande Cache Institution sign. If driving, park on the north side of the road in the graveled area.
Griffiths Trail can be a short hike of 1.5 km, or, depending upon which segments you choose, up to 15km.  The trail has many viewpoints and is popular for walking, running and biking. Some areas are well-developed and well-marked, but other areas are fragmented and can be challenging to follow.

5. Smoky River South Day Use Area

Location: 15 minutes west of Grande Cache
Enjoy some family fun by the river. Enjoy a picnic, try your hand at fishing, or just relax by the water. It’s a peaceful spot to unwind and enjoy nature.

Dinner

6. Mountain View Family Restaurant

Location: 1701 Pine Plaza Road, Grande Cache
For your final dinner, head to Mountain View Restaurant, inside the Grande Cache Hotel. They offer a variety of delicious dishes in a cozy, family-friendly environment.

Evening

7. Sunset at Grande Cache Lake

Directions: Head north-east on Highway 40 for 5.6km.
End your 48-hour adventure with a peaceful evening at Grande Cache Lake. Enjoy the sunset, take a leisurely walk around the lake, or simply relax by the water.

Tips for Travelers

Packing: Bring layers, as the weather in the Rockies can change quickly. Don’t forget sunscreen, insect repellent, and a good camera.

Wildlife Safety: Always keep a safe distance from wildlife and be bear aware. Carry bear spray if you’re hiking.

Reservations: Book your accommodation and any guided tours in advance, especially during peak seasons.
