Spring and early summer are some of the best times to get outside with the family in Alberta. The air smells like lilacs, flowers are bursting with color, and there are some seriously great spots to check out within a couple of hours of Edmonton. Here are three perfect places for a flower-filled family day:

1. St. Albert Botanic Park
If you’re looking for a laid-back afternoon close to home, head over to the St. Albert Botanic Park. This little gem just outside Edmonton is packed with lilacs that hit their peak bloom from late May through mid-June. There are also rose gardens, perennials, and plenty of space to let the kids run around while you snap some photos.
Best part? It’s totally free to visit, though donations help keep the park looking gorgeous.

2. University of Alberta Botanic Garden
If you’re up for a bit of a drive, the University of Alberta Botanic Garden in Devon is a fantastic spot for a family adventure. There are over 240 acres to explore, with everything from Japanese gardens to a massive rose garden and a lilac walk that smells amazing this time of year.
Make sure to check out the Aga Khan Garden too—it’s like something out of a storybook with its reflecting pools and flower beds. It’s open for the season as of May 9, so it’s a great place to bring a picnic and soak up some nature.

3. Calgary’s 4th Street Lilac Festival
If you’re heading to Calgary, the 4th Street Lilac Festival is a can’t-miss event that’s perfect for families. This one-day street festival on June 1 turns 4th Street SW into a giant, flower-filled playground with live music, food trucks, and plenty of activities for kids.
There’s a little bit of everything—from artisan markets to performances and, of course, tons of lilacs to admire. Go early to snag a good parking spot and catch the parade.

Quick Tip:
Lilac season is short but sweet, usually peaking from late May through mid-June. Plan your visit around those dates for the best blooms—and don’t forget the camera. These spots are prime territory for family photos.
